Evidence

The initial work in North Birmingham on the combination of service improvement and telemedicine resulted in a reduction in wound healing times of 26%. Similar results have been observed by other teams who have successfully implemented the same methodology.

+ Leg Ulcer Telemedicine Study

Good Hope Hospital Leg Ulcer Telemedicine Study

In 2001 with a rapidly growing demand on the Vascular Surgery Department at Good Hope Hospital, the team looked for a strategy to improve patient care across hospital and community teams. This would allow community teams to concentrate on the day-to-day treatment and the maintenance of healing, leaving hospital teams to focus on the specialist assessment and treatment.

The proposed solution involved using telemedicine as a shared electronic record across the NHS net.

Simon Dodds created the software which became known as Leg Ulcer Telemedicine (LUTM) that allowed both patient information to be shared and accurate assessments of wounds using digital photographs.

The research study to test the proposed solution involved fifty patients recruited over a 16-month period from Dec 2001 to May 2003. Patients were randomly allocated to either the usual method of communication and assessment or to the LUTM electronic record. All other treatment protocols were identical in both arms of the study.

The results showed a 26% improved healing time in patients randomised to the LUTM arm and when all factors were taken into account this improvement translates to a 50% reduction in the cost to heal an ulcer.
